With the 2012 Olympic Games in London (UK) now just 51 days away, host broadcaster BBC have revealed an addition to their already-packed plans for covering the latest edition of the popular major sporting event, revealing that with ‘spare capacity’ being confirmed for the free-to-air ‘Freeview HD’ platform, they have won the rights to temporary use of the space to broadcast an additional HD stream for the games.
While terrestrial viewers would have originally been limited to a maximum of two HD channels (BBC HD and BBC One HD), the new update will see the BBC use the capacity on channel #304, with a placeholder currently taking up the space ready for its launch. The move was made possible after the slot for a fifth ‘HD channel’ on Freeview (with ITV1 and Channel 4 HD being the other rights holders aside from the BBC) was made open to bidding, with first-option holders Channel 5 opting not to put in a bid, although the slot will most likely re-open with the end of the Olympic period, with BBC representatives adding that they have no long-term ‘need’ for a third terrestrial HD stream.
As current rights holders, the BBC are opening bidding to a number of content providers and channels that could potentially take the channel off of their hands post-Olympics, but the main focus will be developing the EPG slot ready for its main purpose, which will be airing one of the 24 live HD streams (on satellite and cable platforms such as Sky) as the third of the maximum three available on terrestrial.
